Zn is Amphoteric in nature because oxide of Zn i.e. ZnO reacts with both acid and base to form salts whereas Metal Oxide only react with Acids.

Reactions :

With Acid :
ZnO + HCl ----------> ZnCl2 + H2O

With Base :
ZnO + NaOH ----------> Na2ZnO2 + H2

Zinc oxide is amphoteric because it reacts with both acids and bases to form salts.

ZnO   +   2HCl   →   ZnCl2       +      H2O

                       Zinc chloride

2NaOH + ZnO  →  Na2ZnO2      +      H2O

                     Sodium zincate
