Explanation:
My father’s father’s father was an immigrant to the United States from Italy. He was a shoemaker in the old country but couldn’t find work in his trade, so he drifted from one job to another before becoming a cab driver in Washington DC.
When my father’s parents met, my grandfather was an electrician by trade but better known as a professional musician, who played in a band with his brothers all over the Washington, DC area. My grandmother was a 16-year-old girl who fell for him, and they eloped in Granddad’s Model T Ford. During the Depression he bought a small hardware store with two apartments on the second floor; they lived in one and the rent from the other paid the mortgage on the hardware store. Grandmother and Granddad fought constantly and both had a series of affairs; they finally divorced. Grandmother moved to Denver, Colorado and bought a motel, while Granddad sold his hardware store to the federal government (the Department of Transportation building now stands on the site) and bought a farm in Fairfax, Virginia, later selling that to developers, and he died a millionaire.
