• This was the time of colonial rule in India when the Muslims were in a large number but they fear about getting representation in the government and other related affairs. The British brought democracy to strengthen their rule over India (you might be remembering, many European powers had achieved democracy)$.$
• On the demands of Muslims represented my Muslim leaders like Mohammed Ali Jinnah, British reserved separate electrorates for identifying people on the basis of caste & religion. But, This was severely disregarded and protested by Gandhiji.
