Michael Madhusudan Dutta enjoys the status of and epic poet in Bangla literature. He was the first to use blank verse in the play Padmavati and he revived Bangla literature from stagnation both in style and content. Under the pseudonym Timothy Penpoem, Michael Madhusudan Dutta published his two books of English poems 'The Captive Ladie and Visions of the Past.'

Michael Madhusudan Dutta, a pioneer in Bengali literature used the pseudonym of Timothy Penpoem. He is credited with many literary work in Bengali language. He first deployed a blank verse ("Amitrakshar chhanda") in the play Padmavati. The then stagnant Bengali literature rose with flying colours with his sincere efforts. He was greatly inspired by William Wordsworth and John Milton and also
published his two English poems 'The Captive Lady' and 'Visions
of the Past'. His last play was 'Maya Kannan' in the year 1972 though he could not complete 'The Slaying of Hector'.
