Definition
Filamentous pseudopodia had been known since the mid-1800s, when the morphologies of protrusive organelles characteristic of various Protozoa were classified. The term ‘filopodia’ was introduced to define these long and slender cellular protrusions. With an advent of cell culture (Harrison, 1907), filopodia were also documented in mammalian cells. At present, this term is variably used to designate a broad class of cellular protrusions characterized by a high length-to-width ratio, as introduced originally, or to refer to a best-studied class of filopodia at the leading edge of migrating animal cells.
