Pythagoras Theorem is used to find a missing side of a RIGHT triangle when given the other two sides.The longest side of the triangle is called the "hypotenuse". Therefore C² is the longest side so it is the hypotenuse . To calculate c² we have to do α² + β² = c². 

If c² is given and you have to find β² you do 

c
² - a² = b² 

To find a² you do
 
c² - b² = a²
