The president of India is Indirectly Elected.

Explanation:

According to Article- 54 , The president shall be elected by an electoral college consisting of -

  • The elected members of both the houses of the Parliament, and
  • The elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of the state.

The president is the nominal executive head.

Method of Election - According to Article 55(3) - the election of the president shall be held in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of single transferable vote and the voting of such election shall be by secret ballot.

Qualifications of the president-

  • According to Article- 58 , of the constitution requires the president candidate to posess the following Qualifications:-
  1. He must be citizen of India .
  2. He must be above the age of 35 years.
  3. He must possess all Qualifications prescribed for election as a member of the lok sabha.
  4. he must not hold any office of profit under the government of india of any state government of any local authority subject to the control of central or state government.
  5. He must not be a member of either house of Parliament or of any state legislature, in case he is then he must vacate his seat before he assumes his office as the president of india
