Q.1. Read the passage carefully and answer the following question that
follows:
The lesson I learnt as a judge was that does not come across a perfect man in
the ordinary run of life. Every man is good in part and bad in part. A man is
called good because his good qualities out number his bad qualities and is
called bad because his bad qualities out number his good qualities. But the
proportion varies and his reaction to outward stimuli depends upon the aspect
of his character that is touched. Further, reputation and character may be
different though sometimes they come together or seem to come together at
a point. A man of good reputation may be of bad character and the other way
around, for reputation may be built up in concealing (one’s feelings) or
propaganda; but character is an integral part of man’s responsibility. Prosperity
or poverty has no connection with character, for men, with or without
character, are found in both. This lesson instilled in me an attitude of
objectivity in evaluating men who appeared before me as parties or witnesses.
The third lesson I learnt was that though gratitude is the best of human
qualities, it is now rarely found in man, immersed as he is, in the competitive
struggle of life. This observation may have a slight amount of unwillingness torecognise goodness, but it is none the less true. There are no doubt exceptions
serving as model or warning. I realised this human weakness in character early
in my life and the only way out of it is not to expect gratitude. Discharge of
one’s duties does not expect a return.
