This is because the oxides of metals form hydroxides in their aqueous solutions. ... (When metal oxides reacts, they produces either OH- ions or H+ ions. they both are basic in nature). Where as, when non metallic reacts with oxides, they produces acidic oxides.

When non metallic oxide for example SO2 (non metal) is dissolved in water it produces sulphurous acid which is acidic in nature.

SO2 + H2O → H2SO3

When metallic oxide (metal) reacts with water it produces metal hydroxides that are basic in nature.

Na2O + H2O → 2NaOH

You can check the nature by using a litmus paper. In the case of sulphurous acid, the blue litmus turns red indicating that it is acidic.
