given each no. is subtracted from 53
the new no.s are 53-x1, 53-x2,.......................,53-x50
the mean of these new no. is -3.5
(53-x1+53-x2+53-x3+.............+53-x50)/50 = -3.5
2650-(x1+x2+..........+x50)=-175
x1+x2+..............+x50 = 2825
mean of the original no.s = 2825/50 = 56.5
