The reactivities of metals towards oxygen,water and acids can be compared by displacement reactions. A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its salt solutions. Based on their displacement reactions, the metals have been arranged in a vertical column in the order of decreasing reactivities. This is called the reactivity series.

The decreasing order of reactivity of zinc, iron, magnesium and sodium is :
