Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is the highest gallantry award for officers and other enlisted personnel of all military branches of India for the highest degree of valour in the presence of the enemy. Introduced on 26th January 1950, this award may be given posthumously.

It is the highest gallantry award of India which is conferred to the soldiers of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, who have shown extreme bravery to defend their country and has ceded his/her life for India in the presence of enemies. The first person to receive the Param Vir Chakra is Major Somnath Sharma.
