Q.3. Ethanoic acid is manufactured by a reaction between methanol (CH3OH) and Carbon monoxide.
CH3OH + CO CH3COOH ∆H= - 137 kj/mol
This reaction is exothermic
The reaction is carried out at a pressure of 30 atmosphere and a temperature of 180 0C.

Predict and explain the effect on the position of equilibrium if the reaction is carried out at 30 atmospheres pressure and 20 oC rather than 180 oC. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… [2]

Suggest one reason why the reaction is carried out at 180 oC rather than 20 oC? …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… [2]

Acetic acid, systematically named ethanoic acid, is an acidic, colourless liquid and organic compound with the chemical formula CH₃COOH. Vinegar is no less than 4% acetic acid by volume, making acetic acid the main component of vinegar apart from water. Acetic acid is the second simplest carboxylic acid.
