Meera's mother, in four times as old as Meera. After 5 years, her mother will be three times as old as she will be then. What are their present ages.

Let present age of Meera =x years

Let present age of Meera's mother =y years

After five years age of Meera =(x+5) years

After five years age of Meera's mother =(y+5) years

According to problem,

y=4x …………..(1)

y+5=3(x+5) ………(2)

Put (1) in (2), we get

4x+5=3x+15

4x−3x=15−5

x=10

y=40

∴ Meera's present age =10 years

Meera's mother's present age =40 years.
