which is lit by the sun. These changes are called the phases of the moon. The full moon can be seen when the sun

lights up the whole side of the moon facing the earth. The new moon appears when the moon is on the side of the

earth directly in line with the sun. The side facing the earth is not lit, so it is also sometmes called the ‘dark moon.’
