Q-6
Central Point (p.29-32): ………………………………………………
29. At last to the top of the pyramid! But only when every imaginable need has been met is a person ready for the maximum growth through self-actualization. Maslow himself had difficulty finding a precise definition for self-actualization. He felt that all people have some inner talents or abilities that they want to use or actualize. If all lower needs are met, people can grow and develop by using these abilities. This growth is a continuous process that allows individuals to find self-fulfillment and realize their full potential.
30. In this attempt to identify some characteristics of people who have reached the level of self-actualization, Maslow studied the lives of forty-nine people that he believed to be self-actualizers. Among those studied Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, William James, and Jane Addams. Among the common characteristics of self-actualizers were:
• Honesty. They have an ability to be objective and do not show self-interest.
• Creativity. They are spontaneous and natural and enjoy trying new approaches.
• Acceptance. They have total acceptance of themselves and are willing to accept others for what they are.
• Appreciation. They possess an ability to become fully absorbed, enjoying even simple and basic experiences.
• Sense of humor. They can recognize cleverness and whimsy and will laugh easily.
• Sensitivity. They experience a deep feeling of sympathy for other people.
31. According to Maslow, self-actualization is extremely rare. He screened about three thousand students and found only one self-actualized person. Although self0actualization is slightly more likely among other individuals, it is far from common. Most people never move above the level of esteem. They never reach self-actualization and fully develop their potential.
32. Slightly more common than self-actualization are what Maslow called “peak experiences.” A peal experience is an extremely brief, momentary sense of total happiness or fulfillment. For a few seconds or perhaps a minute, you have a sense of self-actualization. This feeling can come from such experiences as watching a spectacular sunset, holding a baby, running a marathon, creating a sculpture, or greeting a returned love. Peal experiences give the same feeling of aliveness and wholeness that self-actualizers encounter. However, the feeling ends abruptly.”
