Q.6 Write an experiment to show that metals form basic oxides with neat diagram.
Answers
Activity :- To Show that metals react with Oxygen to form basic Oxide.
Things Needed :- A magnesium rubbin, a Sand paper, a pair of Tongs, a busen burner, a boiling tube, water and a litmus solution.
Method :-
1. Take a small piece of magnesium ribbon and clean it by rubbing its surface with sandpaper.
2. Hold the magnesium ribbon at one end with a pair of tongs and bring its other end and over the flame of a busen burner till it catches fire.
3. Put the magnesium oxide powder in a boiling tube, add a little water and shake it. Now, add some red litmus solution to the boiling tube and observe the change in colour.
Observation :-
1. When the magnesium metal burn in air, it combines with oxygen of air to form magnesium oxide. (White powdery substance)
Magnesium + Oxygen = Magnesium oxide.
2. Magnesium oxide dissolves in water partially to form magnesium hydroxide solution.
Magnesium oxide + Water = Magnesium hydroxide.
The magnesium hydroxide turns red litmus solution blue, that it is the base, Thus magnesium ribbon is basic in nature.
Conclusion :- Metals react with oxygen to form basic oxide.
