There are certain responses in the body which are automatic, spontaneous and take place without the involvement of the brain. Such actions are called reflex actions.

The path along which the reflexive impulses travel is called the reflex arc.

All the 3 types of neurons , namely sensory, mixed and motor neurons , are involved in a reflex action . If we touch a sharp pointed object, we immediately withdraw our hand. Here the skin is the receptor and it receives the stimulus, that is the pain. The impulse then travels through a sensory neuron to the spinal cord. In the spinal cord, the impulse is transferred through an association neuron to the motor neuron and finally to the muscles.
