Q.7 The decomposition of H2O, in alkaline medium catalysed by iodide ions takes place in two
steps as follows:
step 1 - H2O + 1 → HO + 10 (slow)
step II - H: O2 + 10 + H2O + + O2 (fast)
Write the rate law expression and determine the Order of the reaction.

Answer:

For a Complex Reaction, the Rate of overall reaction depends upon the rate of reaction of the slowest step of the complex reaction.

Step-1 is the slowest step of the complex Reaction. Hence, the Rate of this step is the rate of reaction.

Rate of Step-1 = k[H 2O 2 ][I −]

Hence,

Rate of Reaction =k[H 2O 2 ] 1[I −] 1

Order of reaction w.r.t H2O 2=1
