Sliding friction is weaker than static friction. That's why it's easier to slide a piece of furniture over the floor after you start it moving than it is to get it moving in the first place.

- The friction between the two surfaces is because of the interlocking of the irregularities of the two surfaces.
- During sliding, contact points do not get enough time to get interlocked properly. Therefore, less friction.
- But, when the object is at rest, the surfaces interlock well, therefore friction is more.
