The following is the solution to the question:

(a) SO₂ combines with chlorine in the presence of charcoal to form sulphuryl chloride (SO₂Cl₂).

SO₂ + Cl₂ → SO₂Cl₂

(b) When sodium hydroxide reacts with sulphur dioxide, it produces sodium sulphite and water. The reaction is as follows:

2NaOH + SO₂ → Na₂SO₃ + H₂O

If there is an overabundance of sulphur dioxide, the produced sodium sulphite interacts with the gas to generate sodium metabisulphite.

If water is included in the same reaction, the reaction is different. Sodium Hydrogensulphite (or Sodium Sulphite) is formed when sodium sulphite combines with water and sulphur dioxide.
