Q. a) list the factors on which the resistance of a cylindrical conductor depends and hence, Write an expression for its resistance.
b) How will the resistivity of a connector change when its length is tripled by stretching is ?
Answers
So now cylindrical conductor is nothing but it's a wire!
So it's simple,
Resistance depends on following :-
(1)Resistivity of the conductor, hey it's natural property and fixed for a substance
(2)area of cross section, actually it's inversely proportional,
(3) length of the wire (directly proportional)
Now accordingly,
R = p l /A
Here,
P = resistivity
Or you can say 1/P is conductivity
I = length of wire
A = area of cross section
Question 2 :-
Volume of conductor will remain constant,
So, V =l*A is constant
Now length is tripled
So new length l' = 3l
Volume constant,
New area of cross section,
A' = V/l' = l*A /3l = A/3
You have asked about resistivity, it will remain constant for a particular substance
But new resistance,
R' = p*3l /(A/3) = 9 pl/A = 9R
