Let the radius of semi-circular sheet be r cm and conical cup be R cm.
Let the depth of the conical cup be H cm.
Given, Diameter of semi circular sheet = 28 cm
That is 2r = 28 cm
⇒ r = 14 cm
Given that the semi-circular sheet is bent into an open conical cup
That is slant height of the cone, L = Radius of the semi-circular sheet
Hence L = 14 cm
Circumference of the semi-cirlce = πr
Circumference of the base of cone = 2πR
∴ 2πR = πr = 14π cm
⇒ 2R = 14 cm
⇒ R = 7 cm
Recall the formula, L2 = R2 + H2
142 = 72 + H2
196 – 49 = H2
H2 = √147
Therefore, H = 7√3cm
Capacity of the conical cup = (1/3)πR2H cubic units
= (1/3)(22/7)(49)( 7√3)
= 1078 cubic cm
