When the poet says so, he is trying to say that there is no point in buying another ball for the boy. There is a probability that he will lose that ball too. Money helps us buy materialistic things and can give us momentary happiness however the boy must learn to overcome loss and grief. Only then will he be able to take on future responsibilities.
