Pressure Belts of the Earth. The distribution of atmospheric pressure across the latitudes is termed global horizontal distribution of pressure. Its main feature is its zonal character known as pressure belts.
The sub-polar low pressure belts extend between 450N and the Arctic Circle in the northern hemisphere and between 45°S and the Antarctic Circle in the southern hemisphere. They are known as the North sub-polar low and the South sub-polar low pressure belts respectively.
When the air sinks it creates an area of high pressure. Winds blow from areas of high to low pressure, which transfers the air from where it is sinking to where it is rising. This continual transfer of wind maintains the pressure belts of high and low pressure which create different global climatic zones.
