Xanthophyceae :- The colour of the members of Xanthophyceae is yellow - green therefore they are called yellow - green algae. Oil and fat their reserve food. Starch is not formed in them.
General Characters of Xanthophyceae :-
1. It's plants are generally found in fresh water pounds, pits and moist place.
2. Plants body is unicellular or multicellular.
3. Xanthophyll pigments is present in the cells.
4. Cells contain chlorophyll 'a', chrophyll 'e', and 'b', and cartoene along with xanthophyll pigments.
5. The plastids are yellow - green in colour.
6. Cells have discoid chromatophores.
7. Starch is not formed in cell's
8. Cells lack pyrenoids.
9. Inner layer of cell wall is made up of cellulose and outer layer is of pectic substance.
10. Motile structure have two flagella.
11. Asexual reproduction generally takes place by means of zoospores, aplanospores or hypnospores.
12. Sexual reproduction is of isogamous type except in vaucheria, it is oogamous.
Classification of Xanthophyceae :-
Fritch divided Xanthophyceae into following four orders :-
1. Heterococcales
2. Heterosiphonales.
3. Heterochloridales.
4. Heterochloridales.
