Diseases can be spread by mosquitoes, air, water, food etc.

Based on the means of spreading the disease, the disease are classified into Airborne diseases, Foodborne diseases, Waterborne diseases, Lifestyle diseases, Vector-borne diseases and Sexually transmitted diseases.

1. Airborne diseases:

  • They are caused by germs, bacteria or virus in the air.
  • For example- Common cold, tuberculosis.

2. Foodborne diseases:

  • They are caused by germs (bacteria, toxins, viruses, fungi) present in the food.
  • Eg: Food poisoning, Typhoid.

3. Waterborne diseases:

  • They are caused by drinking contaminated water.
  • Eg: Cholera, Amoebiasis

4. Lifestyle diseases:

  • They occur because of poor or unhealthy lifestyle.
  • Eg: Heart diseases, Diabetes.

5. Vector-borne diseases:

  • These animals that act as an intermediate between disease causing germs and people are called vectors.
  • Eg: Malaria, Dengue, Fever

6. Sexually transmitted diseases:

  • They are caused due to sexual content from one person to another.
  • Eg: AIDS, Syphilis
