The four major components of environment include lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere, corresponding to rocks, water, air and life respectively.

Air, water and soil pollution are all examples of local environmental problems. Reduced habitat caused by urbanisation or industrial activities, perhaps even leading to extinction of endemic species, other examples are local deforestation , soil erosion or loss of soil fertility due to industrial agriculture.
