Since its coordination number is 4 therefore it can be tetrahedral or squareplanar.but magnetic moment is 5.9 it should be tetrahedral in shape rather than squareplanar because of the presence of five unpaired electron in in the d orbital

As per the magnetic moment value of [MnBr_4]^{2-} the ion exhibit tetrahedral geometry.

Explanation:

  • As the magnetic moment value of the given ion is 5.9 BM, it exhibits tetrahedral geometry.
  • It is because, in [MnBr_4]^{2-}, there are 5 unpaired electrons. This unpaired electrons involved in bonding and gives rise to the tetrahedral geometry.
  • Thus it is inferred that as the spin only magnetic moment value of given ion is 5.9, it shows tetrahedral geometry.
