Q. Toricelli’s barometer used mercury. Pascal duplicated it using French wine of density 984 kg m-3. Determine the height of the wine column for normal atmospheric pressure.

As we know:-

P = dhg

Where d is dnesity. g is accⁿ due to gravity and h is the height of liquid column.

Here,

atmospheric pressure (P) = 1.013 × 10^5 Pa

density of French wire(d) = 984 Kg/m³

g = 9.8 m/s²

h = ?

h = P/dg

= 1.013 × 10^5/984×9.8

= 10.5 m
