Q.) what happens to an animal cell when it is placed in a very dilute external medium? why?

When an animal cell is placed in dilute solution (hypertonic) the cell will begin to lose water by the process of exosmosis. This will result in shrinking of size of the cell. It is because the water concentrations in the cell is high and out the water concentration is low because in a hypertonic solution the solute is more and solvent is less

in this case the animal cell will gain water .in this case of osmosis will take place according to which according to which water particles move from higher water concentration to lower water concentration. in case of red blood cell they are known as haemolysed
