to beat to retreat=to quickly leave

When we saw the police arriving we beat a hasty retreat.

to stick to one's guns=to refuse to change your beliefs or actions

 My parents want me to study accounting, but I'm sticking to my guns and majoring in philosophy.


steal a march on=to spoil someone's plans and get an advantage over 
them by doing something sooner or better than them 

Thecompany plans to steal a march on its competitors by offering the same computer at a lower price.

to pass muster =to be acceptable or satisfactory

If you don't wear a jacket and tie, you won't pass muster at that fancy restaurant. They won't let you in.

up in arms=protesting vigorously about something.

2. to stick to one's guns - To remain firm in one's opinions despite others recommendation

3. to steal a march on -  To accomplish something sooner than other, overtake
