French society was divided unequally between three estates-a) nobility, b)clergy and c) third estate.
Only members of the third estate had to pay taxes.
Peasants made up about 90 percent of the population. However,only a small number of them owned the land. About 60% of the land was owned by nobles.
The members of the nobility and clergy enjoyed certain privileges by birth.
