Q1. Read the passage carefully.
Centuries ago, the Chinese called the soyabean ‘yellow jewel’ or ‘great treasure’. Raised on one-tenth of China’s arable land, soyabeans are enough to feed the entire population of the nation today.
The American farmer knows that the soya plant demands little care and attention. Yet, it gives rich yields. These two traits of the plant evoke the highest admiration from the American farmer, who calls it ‘the Cinderella crop’. The Japanese look upon the soyabean as a divine source of food. They link the bean with spiritual powers. It is a rich and cheap source of protein. It contains all the eight amino acids that the human body needs.
In China, for centuries, TOFU, a cheese obtained from soyabeans, has been popular. Recently, in some Western nations, icecream made from soya milk has found an ever-expanding clientele. Soyabeans are turned into flour to bake bread and make chapattis. Some intrepid manufacturers have produced defatted products from soyabeans which taste like meat. Soya sauce is also in much demand.
Soyabean is the best friend of those who are fat, who only have to take to a diet in which the soyabean supplants the fatty substances, to help in shedding weight. The fields in which the soyabean can find application are manifold. It is used extensively to feed cattle. A glue produced from the beans has been found to be economical and efficient in binding cardboard. In the manufacture of paint, wallpaper and tyres too, soyabeans are fast becoming a substitute for more expensive ingredients.
Can we, therefore, keep the soyabean out any longer? Think of the advantages the bean holds. It is the cheapest source of protein which can replace conventional, costly sources of protein like fish and meat. The soya plant is hardy and gives a rich yield even if weather conditions are not exactly favourable. Can the farmer ask for anything more? Thus, the soyabean holds the key to India’s future food needs.
