Q2. Read the following passage and answer the following questions:
(5 X 1 = 5)
Who was Robin Hood-was he real or legendary? The Robin Hood stories come from the time we call
Middle Ages , about the year 1000 to 1500. They are 'folk' stories, told by or to -the people of the small farm
and villages. Not the rich. Not the lords and ladies. Not the people who could read and write, like the
churchmen.
Most of the common people were poor. Often, they suffered at the hands of the men with power and
riches. These were the lords and the owners of land, and some churchmen. Not many people with power did
anything to help the poor. Their life was difficult.
When life is like that, the common people love to hear stories about a folk hero. Many countries have
stories about folk heroes. Sometimes they are real people. Sometimes, as with Robin Hood, we don'
know: was he a real person? The stories are probably based on iwe real outlaws.
The folk hero always wins in the fight against power that is unfairly used. Folk heroes like Robin Hoo
help the common people when they are faced with unjust powerful people. Those who hear the stories fee
that the hero is 'on our side'.
The Robin Ilood stories were first told as brillick. A balled is a poem that tells a story, and at first it wa
sung. The story of Robin Hood and Sir Richard of the Ice is taken from a ballad.
The earliest Robin Hood ballads were sung a long time before there were any printed books in Britain
The first written record of Robin Ilood comes from the 1370s. Around 1450, Robin Hood plays were bein
staged.
The Robin Hood stories that come from very carly ballads do not have anything about Maid Mariar
who was Robin Ilood's wife. She came into later ballads, with the fat and jolly Friar luck.
According to legend, Robin Hood was an outlaw. Ile lived in Sherwood Forest. Nottinghamshire
