At about 30° to 35° North and South of the Equator lies the area where the ascending equatorial air currents descend. This is a region of High Pressure. The winds from the Subtropical region blow towards the Equator as Trade winds and towards the Sub Polar Low pressure belt as Westerlies. The Sub tropical low pressure belt is also known as Horse Latitude.

Since the earth is inclined 23.5° towards the sun, Shifting of pressure belts takes place (5° to the North or South depending on the position of the Earth).
