When I wake up in the morning, I go and find something to eat or prepare, then start asking my siblings what they need to do for school. In our house I am the second-born but I am the oldest one of those who go to school, so I take all the responsibility to make sure everyone is doing good with school.

These days, me and my siblings are working together, each one with her computer. If someone gets stuck, you just ask and we can help each other.

When I get tired, I watch the news. BBC Swahili and VOA are the channels that I usually watch but BBC is my favourite one. The news that I am watching the most is about Coronavirus and where it is now. I want to know where most people with Coronavirus are. I find out America is the country that has the most people with Coronavirus and that makes me pay more attention to this issue.

During all of these study at home weeks I am pretty busy, helping my siblings, making sure they are done with their work or meeting with their teacher. But also I like it because I am learning new things from them while we are studying together (Figure 1).

These are the people who I spend my time with, my siblings and my cousin with his wife who came to our house for a couple weeks. It is fun to have him with his family because he likes to dance and listen to music. Sometimes he tells us to go outside to dance and have some fun. We don’t have a baby at home, the last born is 10 years old so we are very happy to have my cousin’s baby who is 8 months old. Everyone is very excited at home, but sometimes we have little fights over who gets to carry the baby because it has been a long time now without carrying or playing with a baby.

My cousin’s wife is not a talkative person, but she is very funny and she likes to tell us stories about her family. When everyone is busy on their phones or watching TV, my cousin brings something to talk about or something that will be a little challenge and everyone will focus on the challenge. One day he told us to go outside. He said he would bring a dance and give money to whoever learned how to do the new dance. Everyone ignored him, so he raised the amount of money. Everyone said okay let’s start it. He brought a hard dance. No one got the money but later everyone came to like it.

For all of these things we have been doing it has been very good but during this hard time of COVID19 it is not very enjoyable.

Before the pandemic, we were cooking less and less. Research suggests that a decline was underway in home cooking, cooking skills and confidence in a number of countries including the UK to the USA, Canada and Australia.

Public health agencies were increasingly promoting cooking from scratch because of its connection to better diets. However, a lack of time restricted people’s ability to use these cooking and food skills.

Now COVID-19 has caused a dramatic shift in our food practices (as in so many areas of life). New trends, such as a wave of people turning to breadmaking, suggested that for a number of people, the pandemic had freed up time to focus on food preparation.
