• The water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act was the first environmental protection act that came into existence in the year 1974.
• This act was implemented to stop and control the pollution of water bodies and restore their cleanliness and purity.
• In this act, the discharging of pollutants into the water bodies was strictly prohibited and heavy penalties were levied in case of non-compliance.
• In the beginning, that is in the year 1947 this act was imposed on only a few states, and later the resolution to adopt this act was passed which led to more states adopting it.
• This act was formed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
