  • With the symbol Ne and atomic number 10, neon is a chemical element. It's a noble gas, which means it's extremely rare.
  • Under standard conditions, neon is a colourless, odourless, inert monatomic gas with a density of roughly two-thirds that of air.
  • It was discovered in 1898, along with krypton and xenon, as one of three rare inert elements left in dry air after nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide had been eliminated.
  • The brilliant red emission spectrum of neon, the second of these three rare gases to be found, readily identified it as a new element. We presently know around 110 elements.
  • The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry has categorically classified and approved 106 of these by 1980. (IUPAC).
