Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD, also called biological oxygen demand) is the amount of dissolved oxygen needed (i.e. demanded) by aerobic biological organisms to break down organic material present in a given water sample at certain temperature over a specific time period. The BOD value is most commonly expressed in milligrams

Biochemical oxygen demand ( BOD) : The total amount of oxygen consumed by microorganisms ( e.g., bacteria ) in decomposing the waste ( e.g., organic matter ) present in a certain volume of a sample of water is called biochemical oxygen demand of the water.
The amount of BOD in the water is a measure of the amount of organic matter in water , in term of how much oxygen will required to break it down biologically.
A clean water would have BOD value of less than 5ppm.
