Atomic radius : atomic radius means radius of atom or size of atom. it can be measured with help of X - Ray or spectroscopic method.
it is used in case of atom { like H , O , F atoms }
but in case of metal we have to use metallic radius for finding size of metal { Al, Mg, Ca} . and for finding size of non - metal { H2, Cl2, O2 } we have to use covalent radius.
ionic radius : ionic radius means radius of ion or size of ion. it can be estimated by measuring the distances between cations and anions in ionic crystal.
we have to know,
A cation is smaller than its parent atom because effective nuclear charge increases as result of loss of one or more electrons.
A anion is larger than its parent atom because
effective nuclear charge decreases as result of gain of one or more electrons.
example :- radius of F- ion > radius of F - atom
