Given :- Two pipes M and N can fill a tank in 52 and 78 minutes respectively. Both the pipes are opened together, after how many minutes should pipe N be turned off so that the cistern is filled in 39 minutes ?

Solution :-

→ LCM of 52 and 78 = 156 litre = Let capacity of tank .

so,

→ Efficiency of tank M = Capacity / Time taken = 156/52 = 3 litre / min.

and,

→ Efficiency of tank N = Capacity / Time taken = 156/78 = 2 litre / min.

then,

→ Efficiency of both = 3 + 2 = 5 litre / min .

Now, let both the pipes are opened together for x minutes .

A/q,

→ x * 5 + (39 - x) * 3 = 156

→ 5x - 3x = 156 - 117

→ 2x = 39

→ x = 19.5 minutes (Ans.)

Hence, pipe N should be turned off after 19.5 minutes .
