Question 30:- 20. Jai and Veeru are very close friends. They decide to visit their friend Thakur living in Ramgarh by their own cars. Jai's car travels at a speed of x km/h while Veeru's car travels 5 km/h faster than Jai's car. Jai took 4 hours more than Veeru to complete the journey of 400 km. Solution :-

given that, Jai's car travels at a speed of x km/h .

so,

→ Speed of jai's car = x km/h

→ Distance covered = 400 km

then,

→ Time taken by jai = Distance / speed = (400/x) hours .

and,

→ Speed of Veeru's car = 5 km/h faster than jai's car = (x + 5) km/h

→ Distance covered = 400 km

then,

→ Time taken by Veeru = Distance / speed = (400/x + 5) hours .

→ (400/x) - (400/x + 5) = 4

→ {400(x + 5) - 400x} /x(x + 5) = 4

→ 400x + 2000 - 400x = 4x² + 20x

→ 4x² + 20x - 2000 = 0

→ 4(x² + 5x - 500) = 0

→ x² + 5x - 500 = 0

→ x² + 25x - 20x - 500 = 0

→ x(x + 25) - 20(x + 25) = 0

→ (x + 25)(x - 20) = 0

→ x = (-25) or 20

since speed can't be in negative.

therefore,

→ Speed of jai's car = x = 20 km/h .

hence,

→ Speed of Veeru's Car = (x + 5) = 20 + 5 = 25 km/h (Ans.)
