there are lot of difference between sigma and pi bond . some of are :-
i) sigma bond is formed by the axial overlapping ( end to end overlapping ) of atomic orbitals but pi bond is formed by the sideways overlapping ( lateral overlapping ) of atomic orbitals .
ii) sigma bond involves s - s, s - p, and p- p atomic orbitals but pi bond involves p - p atomic orbitals.
iii) sigma bond is stronger than pi bond because in sigma bond , the overlapping of orbitals take place to a larger extent while In pi bond , the overlapping of orbitals take place to a smaller extent .
iv) sigma bond may exist alone or along with pi bond but pi bond always present along with sigma bond .
v) electron cloud of sigma bond is symmetrical about internuclear axis but electron cloud of pi bond is unsymmetrical . it consists of electron cloud below and above the internuclear axis.
vi) rotation is possible in sigma bond but it is impossible in pi bond .
