Present ages of Roger and Rafal are in the ratio 6:7. Eight years hence the ratio of their ages will be 22:25.

What was the ratio of their ages six years ago

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

Ratio of present ages of Roger and Rafal = 6:7

Present age of Roger = 6x

Present age of Rafal = 7x

8 year hence,

Age of Roger = 6x + 8

Age of Rafal = 7x + 8

Ratio of ages of Roger and Rafal = 22:25

Therefore,

 \frac{6x + 8}{7x + 8}  =  \frac{22}{25}

= 25(6x + 8) = 22(7x + 8)

= 150x + 200 = 154x + 176

= 200 - 176 = 154x - 150x

= 24 = 4x

x = 24/4 = 6

Roger's present age = 6 × 6 = 36 years

Rafel's present age = 7 × 6 = 42 years

Ratio of their ages six years ago = 30/36 = 5:6

The answer is 5:6
