A Periodical assessment of the population of animals inhabiting a Wild-Life sanctuary is done.

Different species have a particular way of them being counted. There are many ways to do this.

In Solitary and less number of Individuals inhabiting a region ,like Tigers, Leopards, the Standard methods are Footprints/ Pug-marks studying and database creation. Radio collaring and tracking individuals ( more dependable way ), keeping Camera Traps at vantage points, and /or a combination of all these methods to rule out duplicating or repeating the counted animals.

In herd animals like Deer & Antelope, Wild Pig, Gaurs and others, the herd counting is easier, and will be done by keeping the Herd leaders or their favorite grazing grounds into consideration. Similar case with Elephants too.

Still with all care taken and all mistakes avoided there could be a few variations like for Example it could be 28–30 Tigers, but not 28- 150 or such variations.

This is about the Rain Forests, where the counting has to be done on Ground and sometimes assisted by Satellite tracking also.

In open places like the Rann of Kutch, The Deserts and Grass lands of Africa, satellite imaging is practiced.

The Most difficult terrain where such census has to be taken physically are the Mountainous Sanctuaries where Elusive animals, like Snow Leopards, Ibex, Mountain Sheep, etc are done. Here Radio-collaring and Satellite Tracking are very effective methods.
