In microscopic organisms both growth and differentiation means the same.
That is when they differentiate or reproduce they grow. They don't grow in size as multicellular organisms. For them growth is increase in number.

But in case of multicellular organisms, growth means increase in mass or increase in cell number. But differentiation or reproduction in case of multicellular organisms is the production of new organisms.

In multicellular organisms growth and differentiation is completely different things.

Thus they are referred to as open means different.
