TRANSEVERSE WAVE-

In this type of wave the particles move in a direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation.

  • They do not cause any pressure variations in the medium in which they travel.
  • They move through alternate crest and troughs.

For example, Radio wave, light wave.

A transverse wave is a moving wave whose oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of the wave or path of propagation. A simple example is given by the waves that can be created on a horizontal length of string by anchoring one end and moving the other end up and down.

Examples of transverse waves include:

  • ripples on the surface of water.
  • vibrations in a guitar string.
  • a Mexican wave in a sports stadium.
  • electromagnetic waves – eg light waves, microwaves, radio waves.
  • seismic S-waves.
