Kossel and Lewis developed the electronic theory of valence to explain the formation of chemical bonds between the two atoms. According to this theory, every atom tries to attain octet configuration (presence of eight electrons) in its valence shell by losing or gaining or by sharing of electrons.

Electronic theory of valence by Lewis & kossel:-

  • Kossel and Lewis explains the chemical nature of an atom by observing chemical activity of noble gases.

  • Remaining elements gets stability by losing or gaining or by sharing the electrons.

For Example:-

  • IA group elements (except H) get inert gas configuration by losing electrons

  • VIIA group elements get inert gas configuration by gaining of electrons

  • IVA group elements get inert gas configuration by sharing electron
