He wanted to set an example for all the other employees for dishonesty.

Thus, the narrator was locked up in a room.

When Pongo returned with the other officer, the narrator had finished all the seventeen oranges with seeds and peel.

So, Pongo said that the narrator was unlucky for him.

I don’t think so because the narrator became a book writer. Maybe it was in the story that he got caught
